BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday alerted party activists about conspiracies hatched to split BNP and its unity with Jatiya Oikya Front.
After a number of leaders raised questions regarding BNP’s alliance with JOF at a discussion in the capital, he said the decision came from former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
He told them that similarly the decision to participate in the December 30 general election was also taken by Khaleda Zia.
Fakhrul was the chief guest at the discussion to commemorate former BNP secretary general KM Obaidur Rahman’s 12th death anniversary.
The commemoration turned into debate after JOF leaders ASM Rob,
Mahmudur Rahman Manna, BNP leader Shah Moazzem Hossain and even the audience exchanged blames over BNP forging alliance with JOF and its outcome.
‘Everything was done as part of the movement as only emotion is not enough to win struggles,’ said Fakhrul.
He said that the farcical December 30 election was held by the government under blueprint to destroy democracy.
BNP formed the alliance with JOF and took part in the general election as part of a movement to restore democracy, he said.
He said Khaleda Zia herself gave the directive to continue the alliance after the general election.
A BNP activist interrupted Fakhrul to ask why no movement was organized to free Khaleda Zia since she is in the jail in politically motivated corruption cases.
Fakhrul invited him to the podium and requested him not to spread rumors and false propaganda that could confuse the party’s rank and file.
Shah Moazzem Hossain, who spoke as the special guest raised the question why Dr Kamal Hossain was made the alliance leader and why BNP took part in the elections though its demands for polls under a neutral government and Khaleda Zia’s release were not met.
Mahmudur Rahman Manna questioned why no hartal was called though the general election was rigged.
He also obliquely criticize BNP over its failure to utilize the rigged DUCSU polls and the students road safety movement.
ASM Rob said ‘Movement never fails as it would get fresh momentum just wait and see.’
He said, ‘The government will be simply washed away when the movement reaches its peak due to accumulated public anger.’
