Executed Mufti Hannan, two aides buried

Banned Islamist outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami chief Mufti Abdul Hannan Munshi and his associates — Delwar Hossain Ripon and Sharif Shahedul Alam Bipul who were hanged on Wednesday night over the grenade attack on former British envoy Anwar Choudhury in Sylhet in 2004, were buried at their village homes early Thursday.

Mufti Hannan was buried in Gopalganj while Bipul and Ripon in Chandpur and Moulvibazar respectively.

Hannan was buried at his family graveyard after a namaz-e-janaza at Hiron Bala Girls’ Madrassah and Orphanage premises in Kotalipara around 5:45am. His brother Munshi Aliuzzaman conducted the namaz-e-janaza.

An ambulance carrying the body of the executed HUJI chief arrived here around 5:20am amid tight security. Kotalipara upazila nirbahi officer Zilal Hossain, executive magistrate Mahbub Jamil and officer-in-charge of Kotalipara police station Quamrul Faruk were present during the burial.

Besides, Sharif Shahedul Alam Bipul was buried at his family graveyard around 4:30am at village Meshadi in Chandpur sadar. Bipul’s father Hemayet Uddin received the body and a namaz-e-janaza was held near the graveyard with participation of Bipul’s family and relatives.

Konagaon Jam-e-Mosque imam Ibrahim Ali conducted the namaz-e-janaza around 12:15am.

Mufti Hannan and Bipul were executed at Kashimpur Central Jail at 10:01pm while Ripon at Sylhet Central Jail at the same time.

The three HUJI men were hanged as president Abdul Hamid rejected their petitions seeking clemency.

On March 19, the Appellate Division upheld the death sentence of Mufti Hannan, Ripon and Bipul after hearing the review petitions filed by the three death-row convicts.

On December 7, 2016, the Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, upheld the death penalty of the three in the case rejecting appeals filed by the HUJI chief and Bipul challenging the High Court verdict that had upheld their death sentence awarded by the tribunal.

On February 11, 2016, the High Court delivered the verdict upholding the death sentence of the three.

According to the sensational case, the convicts threw several grenades aiming at the entrance of Hazrat Shahjalal shrine in Sylhet city on May 21, 2004 with the intention to kill the then UK high commissioner to Bangladesh Anwar Choudhury when he was about to enter the shrine.

Anwar Choudhury, Sylhet deputy commissioner Abul Hossain and 36 bystanders were injured while assistant police sub-inspector Kamal Uddin and two bystanders were killed in the grenade attack.
