Reiterating that his party will sever its ties with the ruling alliance, Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad on Sunday said they will take part in the election forming a new alliance.

The JP chief said this while talking to reporters after a meeting with Hefajat-e-Islam ameer Shah Ahmed Shafi at Al-Jamiatul Alia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam Madrasah at Hathazari in Chittagong at noon.

Asked about the meeting, Ershad said, “I came here (Hathazari) to seek Hujur’s (Shafi’s) blessings, and he blessed me so that I could be successful in the future.”

Later, Hefajat secretary general Junaid Babunagari told the journalists that Ershad assured them of meeting their 13-point demand if JP is voted to power.

Terming Hefajat as non-political organisation, Babunagari, the second-in-command of Hefajat, said the Islamist group will neither form any alliance nor contest the election.

However, he said, they will back the party and alliance that will implement their 13-point demand.

JP central leaders Anisul Islam Mahmud, MP, Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu and Solaiman Alam Sheth were also present.

Hefajat’s demands include restoration of the phrase ‘Complete faith and trust in the Almighty Allah’ in the constitution and repealing all the laws contrary to the holy Quran and Sunnah and passage of a law keeping a provision of the maximum punishment of death sentence to stop defaming Allah, Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) and Islam, putting an end to free-mixing of men and women and declaring Qadianis (Ahmadiyyas) as non-Muslim officially.
