EC can deploy army in city polls if thinks it’s necessary: Quader

Communications Minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday said the Election Commission can deploy army personnel during Saturday’s polls to four city corporations if it thinks it’s necessary.

“The Election Commission can go for army deployment during the city corporation polls if it thinks it’s necessary. The government won’t interfere in this regard,” he said.

The minister was talking to reporters after visiting the construction work on the four-lane of Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Gauripur in Daudkandi upazila at noon.

The four city corporations — Rajshahi, Sylhet, Khulna and Barisal — go to polls on Saturday.

Obaidul Quader, however, claimed that elections to three city corporations –Chittagong, Rangpur and Comilla — were held in a peaceful manner without army deployment. “If it could happen there, then why elections to Barisal, Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet city corporations won’t be held peacefully? Army can’t be deployed everywhere.”
