DMP to clean up its act

  • In the backdrop of allegations that the capital’s policemen are misusing their powers, the DMP is now trying to recruit responsible and sincere police officials from outside Dhaka

Dhaka Metropolitan Police has formed a four-member committee to select responsible and sincere police officials from outside Dhaka for appointing in the DMP.

The decision to form the committee was taken at a recent conference in the wake of some of the recent incidents of harassment and assault by police that caused a stir. The inspector general of police was present at the conference held at Rajarbagh Police Lines.

In recent times, several such incidents took place, including the death of a tea-seller from burn injuries caused by police in the capital’s Mirpur, a rickshaw-puller sustaining leg injuries having been shot by police, harassment of a Bangladesh Bank employee, and sexual harassment of a private university female student.

At the monthly crime conference held at the DMP Headquarters yesterday, the matter of forming the four-member committee was disclosed.

A source in yesterday’s conference told the Dhaka Tribune the committee would include an additional commissioner, a joint commissioner and two deputy commissioners.

Before the deployment of any police official coming from outside the DMP, a recommendation from the committee would be needed.

The committee will verify the previous records and service history of the police officials and recommend them for deployment if found eligible.

The conference criticised role of former OC of Shah Ali police station AKM Shahin Mondol and said he was negligent when the incident of the tea-seller receiving burns took place.

To prevent the recurrence of such incidents, DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia instructed all officers-in-charge of the police stations under the DMP to strictly supervise their subordinates.

He also asked police officials not to harass any innocent person and not to arrest anyone based on suspicion. “Such acts tarnish the image of police.”

The DMP commissioner asked policemen to remain alert while on duty and also asked senior officials to properly train and advise their subordinates.

“Robbery, murder or similar crimes will be investigated by both police and the Detective Branch.”

DMP Deputy Commissioner (media) Maruf Hossain Sarder told the Dhaka Tribune some police officials were awarded at the conference for their service.

Deputy Commissioner of Tejgaon zone Biplob Kumar Sarker was awarded as the best deputy commissioner in the DMP for the fifth time while Pallabi zone Assistant Commissioner ABM Zakir Hossain was named the best assistant commissioner. Gandaria police station Officer-in-Charge Kazi Mizanur Rahman got the award for the best officer-in-charge.

The conference also discussed some other recent crimes and the DMP commissioner gave necessary directives in this regard.

DMP deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners and officers-in-charge of Dhaka’s 49 police stations attended the daylong conference.
