Compromise before time runs out: BNP to govt

Fall can’t be resisted with billboards as couldn’t Ayub Khnan: Rafiqul Islam Miah

BNP standing committee member MK Anwar on Monday urged the government to sit in a dialogue to reach an amiable solution to the ongoing political crisis before the time runs out.

“Come to the negotiation table to a have logical solution to the political stalemate before the time runs out. Or else, Awami League will be wiped out from the history of politics,” he told a discussion.

Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB) arranged the discussion at the Jatiya Press Club marking its 24th founding anniversary.

BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, DAB secretary general Dr ZM Zahid Hossain, ex-pro vice chancellor of Dhaka University AFM Yusuf Haider and filmmaker Chashi Nazrul Islam, among others, addressed the programme held with DAB president Prof Dr AKM Azizul Haque in the chair.

MK Anwar said the government has indulged in self-glorifying act by hanging billboards. “You haven’t done anything good for the country but given corruption an institutional shape. You’ll have to be accountable to people for all the corruption and misdeeds.”

“They (govt) have started self-flattering by hanging billboards on roadsides. But they’ve forgotten that their real face have got exposed to people. People have rejected them the in the elections to five city corporations,” he added.

Anwar said the government is trying to confuse people by telling them about its development activities as a strategy to sway voters following their defeat in the city polls.

Reiterating his party’s demand for arranging the next polls under a non-party caretaker government, he said they will not allow holding any polls under a partisan government. “Accept people’s demand for restoration of the caretaker government system. Don’t go against people’s will.”

At another discussion, BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah said the ruling party could not do any development in the country. “Now they through billboards are telling people that the country is on the crest of development.”

All Community Forum organised the programme on the ongoing political crisis over next parliamentary election at the Jatiya Pres Club

Recalling that military dictator Ayub Khan during Pakistan rule had also carried out false campaign through billboards highlighting his development activities, Rafiqul said, “False billboard campaign couldn’t save Ayub Khan, such campaign can’t save Sheikh Hasina, either.”

People have already showed their no-confidence in the government through the city polls, he added.

Stating that his party will announce harsher programmes after the Eid-ul-Fitr to force the government to reinstate the caterer government system, Rafiqul asked the party leaders and activists to get ready for a strong movement.
