Burglars tunnel into Sonali Bank in K’ganj, loot Tk 16.40 cr

In a daring bank robbery, burglars have tunneled into the vault of Sonali Bank’s main branch in the district town and looted about Tk 16.40 crore.

The burglary that took place in a filmy style came to light on Sunday afternoon when bank employees went to the vault room for money.

During a visit to the spot, UNB correspondent found that the thieves tunneled their 30-foot way into the vault under the ground from a nearby house.

Locals said a middle-aged person had been living at the house for long. However, he used to go out of the house on the pretext of visiting his ailing parents. He was absent at the house from Saturday.

Humayan Kabir Bhuiyan, manager of the branch, said it was not clear when the incident happened.

Police kept the bank cordoned off after the incident.

A case was filed in this connection, said Advocate Lutfar Rashid Rana, adviser of the bank.

On information, police super Anwar Hossain Khan and head of Sonali Bank Kishoreganj Zone Sheikh Amanullah visited the spot.

While talking to reporters, the SP said a special team started from the capital for the spot to collect evidence. “We’re investigating the incident.”

Meanwhile, eight policemen who were on duty at the bank branch were suspended for dereliction of duty.
