BNP welcomes UN, others’ move to resolve crisis

BNP on Wednesday welcomed the proposals of the United Nations and all other quarters for a meaningful dialogue in a bid to hold a general election under a non-party administration.

In a statement, BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed said, “We welcome the initiatives of the United Nations and all other quarters for meaningful talks aiming to arrange polls under a non-party government.”

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has recently sent separate letters to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chief Khaleda Zia reportedly seeking their joint efforts to resolve the ongoing political crisis.

Confirming the UN chief’s letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam on Wednesday said the government is not willing to hold dialogue with the ‘killer’.

Salahuddin alleged Awami League wants to perpetuate the power it ‘grabbed undemocratically and unconstitutionally through a farcical election’ in the name of protecting constitutional continuation.

The BNP leader criticised the government for what he said resorting to repression, crossfire and enforced disappearance, and warned it that the administration will not be able to suppress the people’s movement for restoring their voting, basic and human rights.

He claimed that their movement is now at the final stage and people’s spontaneous resistance will hasten the government’s fall.

Salahuddin said their ongoing ‘peaceful’ transport blockade will continue and warned that they will be forced to go for tougher action programmes alongside hartal and blockade if the government does not accept their demands by the time.

The BNP leader said the conscious and patriotic section of the country fear that insurgents and undemocratic forces may emerge if the government blocks democratic activities of the opposition.

He called upon the government to pursue the path of saving the country and its people by shunning political vengeance and bad politics.
