BD-S Africa bilateral talks begin in Pretoria Monday

Air, maritime connectivity to be discussed

The second Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) between Bangladesh and South Africa will be held in Pretoria on November 25-26.

Establishing air connectivity, maritime connectivity, opening of South African Mission in Dhaka and cooperation in the fields of trade, education, agriculture, human resources development, rural and social development are likely to dominate the talks, said a Foreign Ministry official on Saturday.

A seven-member delegation, led by Ambassador Mustafa Kamal, Secretary (Bilateral), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will take part in the second (SOM) between the two countries. The first round of the SOM was held in Dhaka last year.

Last year, the two-way trade between Bangladesh and South Africa hovered around $110 million and the prospect of increasing trade volume with South Africa and its neighbouring countries of Southern African Development Community (SADC) is immense, it said.

There is a sizeable Bangladeshi community in South Africa contributing to the economies of the two countries.
