National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Mizanur Rahman has demanded trial of the policemen who were closed or suspended over the killing of Rajon.

“It is not enough to close or suspend these policemen. They must be brought to trial in criminal court,” he said while visiting the family of Samiul Alam Rajon in Bhadeali village of Sylhet Sadar upazila yesterday.

On July 8, the thirteen-year-old died of brain haemorrhage after being tortured by a group of

brutes who were “punishing” him on charges of theft in Kumargaon Bus Stand area of Sylhet city.

Twelve people, including four who have been accused in the murder case, have been held.

A police probe body, led by Sylhet Metropolitan Police, has found negligence of law enforcers in arresting the killers and political influence in letting the perpetrators flee.

On July 23, the authorities closed Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Jalalabad Police Station, and suspended its sub-inspectors Aminul Islam and Zakir Hossain.

Mizanur termed child torture and killing in Bangladesh a matter of concern and dire violation of human rights.

“It should be investigated whether these incidents are taking place due to negligence of the police administration,” the NHRC chief said.

Mentioning that policemen are getting involved in different criminal activities day by day, Mizanur opined that the facilities for the police should be increased alongside ensuring punishment for the corrupt ones.

He also demanded quick repatriation of Kamrul Islam, one of the accused who fled to Saudi Arabia after the murder of Rajon. “If the government takes initiatives, it is possible to bring him [Kamrul] back soon.”

“We are monitoring the Rajon murder case. The culprits will not be spared,” he warned.
