At a press briefing on Monday, he said, “The incident of sexual assault on the DU campus has shocked and ashamed the Human Rights Commission.”

The chairman also showed his frustration over the nonchalant attitude of the law enforcers.

He said, “We are apologising to all women. The incident only manifested how much violent and cruel we could become.”

On the day of Bengali New Year, Apr 14, a group of men sexually assaulted a number of women in the TSC area near the Suhrawardy Udyan gate.

In trying to save women from the assault, a few men, including Liton Nandi, the president of the university chapter of Bangladesh Chhatra Union, were injured.

The alleged indifference of policemen, present in the area during the shocking incidents, has drawn widespread criticism.

The university authorities have also been flayed for being ineffective to stop such harassment.

The student bodies, meanwhile, have accused police of releasing the four harassers who were caught in the act.

An analysis of the CCTV footages of the area on that day showed a group of men were assaulting women on more than one occasion.

A bearded man along with some other men were seen repeatedly harassing the women.

However, those men remained unidentified. Police also could not arrest anyone so far.
