All strategies to be applied to restore CG, says BNP

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday threatened to apply every possible strategy to force the government to amend the constitution paving the way for holding the next polls under a non-party administration.

“We don’t have plenty of time. We’ll have to complete all necessary preparations by this short period, and we’ll apply all the necessary strategies to compel the government to arrange the polls under a non-party caretaker administration by bringing a change to the constitution,” he told a discussion.

Alleging that the government is trying to mislead people by telling them about following the constitution, the BNP spokesman said, “The constitution is for people. It’s not a holy book like Quran or Bible that it can’t be changed. The people of the country want to see a fair election under a non-party administration. So, the charter must be amended.”

Jatiya Jubo Jagpa arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club marking its 23rd founding anniversary.

Fakhrul said they will soon wage a harder movement to force the government to concede to people’s demand for reinstating the caretaker government system.

Referring to Prime Minister’s remarks that the next general election will be held as per the constitution, the BNP leader said the Prime Minister is resorting to this rhetoric to hold the polls under their administration getting isolated from people.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, addressing a meeting of the grassroots level Awami League leaders from seven districts at her official residence said, “The next general election will be held as per the Constitution and that is the aim of the government. We’ve to strengthen democracy and ensure its continuation. We want to make sure there’ll be no coup in the future as in the past and we have to start from a certain point.”

Rejecting the PM’s remarks, Fakhrul said, “The Prime Minister is trying to strengthen democracy by dashing the hopes and aspirations of the crores of people. It seems that she (PM) is trying to establish a controlled democracy in the country by tying belts around people’s necks.”

Fakhrul was also critical of the Prime Minister as she on Wednesday blamed civil society members for all complexities in the country and said this section always wanted to bring in unconstitutional government for their personal benefit.

He said the civil society members were Sheikh Hessian’s favourite when she was in the opposition but now she dislikes them as they are speaking the truth.

Coming down hard on the present government for what he said its indulgence in widespread corruption, the BNP spokesman said, “No sector is left from where the ruling party looted money. Even they (AL men) looted VGD-VGF money. Nothing is left. This government has bogged down in so much of corruption that was not seen over the last 42 years.”

Awami League has turned into a dangerous tyrant, Fakhrul said, adding that the government now has become completely dependent on law enforcement agencies losing the confidence in people. “But nothing can protect them. They must go.”

Chaired by Jubo Jagpa president Insanul Alam Akkas, the programme was addressed by, among others, Jagpa chief Shafiul Alam Pradhan, general secretary Khandaker Lutfar Rahman, vice president Mohiuddin Babul and central leader Sheikh Jamaluddin.
