Unidentified assailants shot dead two, including a local Union Parishad chairman, in Bagerhat on Saturday.
Chairman Jahid Hasan, 53, who is also the Acting General Secretary of the Upazila, was shot dead around 9:45am in front of Amdabad Government Primary School at Khulna’s Rupsha Upazila.
Hasan was a senior leader of Awami League in the area.
He was pillion riding on a motorcycle and the unidentified man riding with him was also killed in the hail of bullets, police said.
They said Jahid Hasan was returning home from Khulna, when he was shot.
Officer in-Charge of Fakirhat Police Station Masud Alam and the Upazila’s ruling party unit chief Swapan Das both said Jahid Hossain had died but could not provide identity of the other man killed on the motorcycle he was riding.
Police later identified the motorcycle rider as ‘Munna’, 30.
Hasan was serving as the UP Chairman for the third time.
Swapan Das said Hasan was on his way to Fakirhat as many times before and the man on his motorcycle was known to him.
A pall of gloom descended in the area as the news of Hasan’s death spread.
Shops and businesses shut down within 15 minutes of the incident. Hundreds of people came out on the streets.
OC Alam said they had not got any information on the killers yet and there were no eye-witnesses.
