AL, BNP lawyers say no to rally at SC

Lawyers close to the two parties reached a consensus on this at a meeting with Chief Justice Md Mozammel Hossain on Tuesday afternoon.

“We have agreed not to hold any meeting or rally on Supreme Court premises, including its main gate,” said SM Rezaul Karim, former general secretary of Supreme Court Bar Association after the meeting at 4:45pm.

On any professional issues, the apex court lawyers will hold their meeting and rally at the Supreme Court Bar Association’s building.

No meeting will also be held at the main gate of the court. If any procession is to be taken out, it must be done through the court’s shrine gate.

BNP lawyer and former general secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association Md Badruddoza Badal was present at the meeting.

“We have given our consent to the proposal of not holding any meeting or rally at the main gate of the Supreme Court,” he said.

Attoney General Mahbubey Alam, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s advisor and Supreme Court Bar Association president AJ Mohammad Ali were also present at the meeting.

Opposition BNP-Jamaat lawyers had on Sunday tried to take out a procession to join the ‘March for Democracy-post rally at the BNP’s Naya Paltan office.

Police dispersed them by using water cannons and sound grenades. But the opposition supporters continued to stage demonstrations.

The police then entered the court premises and baton-charged on the protesters, leaving three lawyers injured.

Opposition lawyers and Juba Mahila League activists had also clashed and hurled stones at each other on the next day.
