AL betrays liberation war spirit: Khaleda

Khaleda

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday said the AL-led government has crushed people’s dream for which they dethroned Ershad’s autocratic regime in 1990.
In a message, Khaleda also said they (ruling party men) cheated the people of the country and the spirit of the liberation war as well.
Khaleda, also a former prime minister, issued the message on the occasion of Fall of Autocracy Day, commemorating military ruler HM Ershad’s bowing out in the face of a mass upheaval on 6 December, 1990.
In the message, she said, “Our democracy has got stumbled again and again on its march forward. But, the democracy aficionados in Bangladesh ensured its path in the country surpassing all obstacles.”
Democracy in Bangladesh is now again facing a crisis. The government that came into power through a controversial election is showing its true colour to the people of Bangladesh, she added.
“People’s rights and independence have been put at stake once again by chaining the nation to an one-party cruel rule,” Khaleda said in her message.
The BNP chief urged all to get united to restore democracy in the country with the spirit of the mass upheaval of 1990.
On 6 December, 1990, the autocratic Ershad regime was forced to step down handing over power to a caretaker administration after nine years of rule. Since then, different socio-political organisations have been observing the day as the Fall of Autocracy Day or Democracy Day.
