727 rescued migrants shifted to Mongdu

The 727 migrants, who had been rescued by Myanmar authorities from its naval territory while on the move reportedly to Malaysia, have been shifted to Mongdu in the country on Wednesday.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Teknaf 42 Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Abujar Al-Zahid told the Dhaka Tribune they were shifted at around 12:30pm via the Naf river – a bordering river of both countries – on two trawlers.

The commander continued that the Myanmar authorities earlier informed them about the transfer.

Besides, 208 more migrant seekers were rescued by the country, and it was claimed that of them, 200 were Bangladeshis. Responding to the claim, Bangladesh requested the Myanmar government to provide them with a complete list of their names.

Despite an appeal from the Bangladesh government, Myanmar is yet to send the list of the migrants.

Further, police in a secret drive have arrested an alleged human trafficker and also a UP member from Dakkhin Para Bazar area of the Sadar upazila on Wednesday.

The arrestee was Mohammad Ekram, 35, a member of the Chaufalandi union of the upazila.

When contacted, Sadar police station OC (investigation) Baktiar Uddin Chowdhury acknowledged this, saying Ekram is one of the top listed human traffickers of the Home Ministry and there are 11 cases against him for the offence.
