100 CCTV cameras installed on Gulshan streets

A total of 100 closed circuit television cameras have been installed on different streets in the Gulshan residential area on Thursday.

The move has been taken as part of a project called “Digital Track,” which was initiated on January 7 and was entirely financed by local businessmen. The DMP will manage the maintenance works.

The newly-elected mayor of Dhaka North Annisul Huq attended the inauguration as special guest at the capital’s Lakeshore Hotel.

While addressing the programme, he said: “The whole of Dhaka North will be brought under CCTV surveillance in a bid to reduce criminal activities.”

Earlier, the DMP authorities told the Dhaka Tribune that the capital’s diplomatic zone, including Gulshan, Baridhara and Niketan, would be brought under surveillance of 400 CCTV cameras to ensure maximum security.

The cameras, apart from functioning as regular CCTV cameras, will send beeps to the nearby police station and the control centre once any blacklisted vehicle or person or object is spotted.

Speakers of the cameras will be set up at 11 police checkposts where duty officers would be able to hear the beeps.

  1. There is a simpler way to do it.
Put a ‘tracker’ tag/band on all known criminals, be it car thieves, pick pockets, molom parties, hijackers; Police already has detail list of all criminals in town.

Problem is, if Police want to hide a crime or save a criminal, no cctv will help. Pohela Boishak at TSC is a case in point.
