Zia’s 33rd death anniv Friday

 BNP, its associate bodies and different socio-cultural organisations will observe the 33rd death anniversary of its founder late President Ziaur Rahman on Friday with various programmes.

On this day, May 30, 1981, Zia was assassinated by a group of disgruntled army officers at Chittagong Circuit House.

Born on January 19, 1936 at Bagbari in Bogra, Zia was a sector commander during the Liberation War and awarded with Bir Uttam, the highest gallantry award for a living officer for his wartime services.

BNP and its front organisations have chalked out a 14-day programme to observe the death anniversary with due respect.

The observance of the death anniversary already began on May 27 and will end on June 9.

The programmes include discussions, hoisting party and black flags, wearing black badges, placing wreaths and offering fathea at Zia’s mazar, distribution of cooked food among the destitute, voluntary blood donation and a photo exhibition.

Meanwhile, BNP arranged a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh on Thursday in observance of the day. BNP chairperson Khaleda

Zia was present at the meeting.

Party flag will be kept at half-mast while black flags will be hoisted at the party office across the country, including Nayapaltan central office, on Friday morning.

Besides, leaders and activists of the party, led by Khaleda, will also place wreaths at the grave of Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on the day.

Jatiyatabadi Ulema Dal will organise a Doa Mahfil on the premises of Zia’s grave while Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB) will provide free medical treatment and medicine in front of the party’s central office.

The BNP chairperson will distribute food among the destitute and poor at various spots across the capital on May 30, 31 and June 1.

Zia founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in 1978.

Khaleda Zia, widow of slain Ziaur Rahman, took over the helm of BNP after her husband’s murder. Led by Khaleda Zia, the BNP governed the country thrice while it remained as the main opposition in parliament twice.
