Pro-BNP professional Zafrullah Chowdhury has congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his becoming the party’s secretary general but criticised the way of his appointment.
Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Chowdhury also expressed doubt about the effectiveness of Mirza Fakhrul, who, he said, had got the post as a ‘favour’ from party Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
“I greet Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as he has been made the secretary general. But it is unfortunate for the nation that a politician is not given the proper honour for his work. He had to become the secretary general by virtue of a person’s pity,” Chowdhury said at a discussion in Dhaka on Monday.
Khaleda named Mirza Fakhrul secretary general 10 days after the party’s Mar 19 national council.
The councillors, like before, gave Khaleda the responsibility to form the BNP committee instead of election.
“The democracy we are talking about doesn’t exist in the party. He (Mirza Fakhrul) would have surely been elected if we practised democracy and Khaleda Zia’s goal could be achieved. He would be able to raise his voice,” Chowdhury said.
He also criticised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for forming her Awami League party’s Dhaka metropolitan committees without election.
The discussion was organised to mark the third anniversary of daily Amar Desh Acting Editor Mahmudur Rahman’s incarceration.
The government shut down Amar Desh for publishing controversial reports and Rahman was arrested in 2013 on charges of treason and incitement of religious hatred.
