German President invites Yunus to visit his country
German Ambassador in Dhaka Dr Albrecht Conze on Thursday expressed his sorrow as Nobel laureate and Grameen Bank founder Dr Muhammad Yunus has not been enjoying the respect he deserves in his own country.
“It saddens me that the distinguished pioneer of microfinance and social business has not been enjoying the respect he deserves in his own country lately,” the envoy said.
The German diplomat came up with the remark when he met Prof Yunus in the morning to convey an invitation by German President Joachim Gauck to visit Berlin early next year.
During the meeting, the German envoy recalled that Yunus’ ties with Germany and its people go back a long way.
He also said that Germany admires Yunus’ outstanding contributions to improving the lives of the most vulnerable and marginalised people, especially women.
Conze also praised Yunus’ leadership in the Garments Industry Transparency Initiative (GITI) which aims to find a consensus on appropriate procedures to regularly adjust minimum wages for garment workers as part of a global effort to deal with labour wage issues.
GITI is a joint initiative by Professor Peter Eigen, the founder of Berlin-based Transparency International (TI) and Professor Yunus.
“Dr Yunus has been instrumental in shaping the GITI which attracted considerable attention in Germany. It’ll contribute towards enhancing Bangladesh’s international reputation after the negative publicity the country has received since the Rana plaza tragedy,” Conze said.

Dr. Yunus does enjoy respect in Bangladesh, however most unfortunate that he earned the wrath of some vested quarter. Undoubtedly he has done some marvelous work and most of us in Bangladesh are proud that his work and ideals are well recognized and are being given the proper respect internationally.
Mr. Panni is right – whole of Bangladesh respects Prof. Yunus except Hasina and her despicable cronies. But who gives a shit about Hasina?
As I understood , PM Hasina is jealous that there can be anyone more respectable than her or her late Father
Hasina and her cronies are living in a different land that is not Bangladesh. They have pandered to their master – India and their intelligence wing. They cannot stand anyone who can achieve something great like Professor Yunus. Hasina thinks every Bangladeshi owes it to her father and therefore do not deserve any respect. God take her to hell.
Allah, I bow my head and ask, if it be Thy will, please save this land from those who
seek to destroy it.
