Bangladesh will be relying on a young pace attack when they lock horns with Afghanistan in the three-match T20I series in Dehradun next month. Following the veteran right-arm pacer Mashrafe bin Mortaza’s retirement from the format last year, the Tigers had to depend on a young pace attack in T20Is.
The 15-member squad announced for the Afghan series has four pacers in the shape of Rubel Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Abu Haider Rony and Abu Jayed Rahi. Right-arm pacer Rubel with 132 internationals under his belt is the most experienced paceman in the squad, followed by Mustafizur, who, despite his debut in 2015, has been able to bag some good experience playing T20 leagues around the globe.
Jayed, who is just one T20I old after making his debut at home in January this year backed by his Bangladesh Premier League T20 performance for Khulna Titans last year, informed that the young pace bowling group is confident and working hard in order to ensure they contribute for the team in the Afghanistan series.
“It is time for us, the young pacers, to take responsibility as there are not many senior pacers in the team except for Rubel bhai and Mustafizur who have got experience,” said Jayed to the media at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka Monday.
“International cricket is a tough place and we are getting ready so that we can represent the country well in the coming days. We spoke to Sujon bhai (Khaled Mahmud) [Monday] and he said it totally depends on us and how we are taking international cricket – it is easy if you take it easy or the other way. If you are confident you can bowl well at any platform let it be international or domestic competition. The young pacers like me, Rony, Mustafizur – we all are working on building our confidence,” the right-arm pacer explained.
The squad for the Afghanistan series started skill training Mondayand according to Jayed the management is prepping the pacers to take advantage of the condition in Dehradun.
“We have started our skill training from (Monday). Wickets here are being prepared similar to that of Dehradun. We will start practising full stretch from [Tuesday]. I am hopeful that the pacers will do well,” said Jayed.
