Death row convict Abdul Quader Molla’s wife arrived at the Dhaka Central Jail on Tuesday to meet her husband before his execution.
Sanoara Jahan along with the Jamaat-e-Islami leader’s family members entered the prison around 7.45pm, half an hour after State Minister for Home Shamsul Haque Tuku said the death sentence would be executed by ‘tonight’.
Molla’s family went to meet him in two microbuses after the prison authorities had written to his family members to do so by 8pm.
Molla’s son Hasan Jamil told bdnews24.com, “We have informed the close relatives about the letter. We are going to meet him.”
Senior Superintendent of jail Forman Ali told reporters 23 family members of Molla entered the prison to meet him.
Among them are his son, four daughters, their husbands and Molla’s brother-in-law.
They will be allowed 30 minutes to stay there, Ali said.
A large number of police have been deployed in front of the jail. Plainclothesmen along with over 300 RAB personnel were also seen around the area.
DMP’s Additional Commissioner (Lalbagh) Abida Sultana said security had been beefed up in the locality.
Earlier in the day, the Jamaat leader’s lawyers had met him. Chief defence counsel Abdur Razzaq had said Molla only directed them to file a review plea of the Supreme Court’s full verdict.
