The Met office has issued weather alert to ports as depression in the Bay of Bengal has turned into a cyclonic storm ‘Roanu’.
Ports in Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been asked to raise local warning signal number four.
The warning means that the ports are threaten by a storm with a wind speed of 40 to 50 kmph, but it doesn’t appear that the danger is sufficiently great as yet to justify the extreme precaution.
All fishing boats and trawlers along the northern part of the Bay and deep sea have been asked to stay close to the coast and move with caution until further notice. Vessels have also been advised not to venture into deep sea.
The Met Office in a special bulletin on Thursday said that the depression over the west-mid and southwest areas of the Bay of Bengal has moved towards the north and turned into a cyclonic storm.
It said the storm was centered about 1365 km southwest of Chittagong port at 12pm, 1335 km southwest of Cox’s Bazaar, 1185 km southwest of Mongla port and 1215 km southwest of Payra port.
Meteorologists say it’s likely to further intensify and move in a north-northeast direction.
Maximum sustained wind speed within 54 km of the storm centre is about 62 kmph, rising to 88 kmph in gusts or squalls.
