Investigators said Monday they had found evidence of Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam’s involvement in six incidents of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
The offences include genocide, murder, torture, rape, inflicting injuries, arson, abduction, loot and confinement, Mohammad Abdul Hannan Khan, chief of the investigation agency, told this to reporters at a press briefing in his Dhanmondi office.
The investigators are expected to submit the report to the prosecution anytime Monday, Khan said.
Azharul was involved in the mass killing in Rangpur where around 1,225 people were killed during the country’s Liberation War in 1971, the chief of the probe body said.
Besides, he was also involved in killing four people, abducting 17, raping one, confining 13, torturing 13 people and looting and torching numerous houses in the district, Khan said.
International Crimes Tribunal-1 on June 30 asked the prosecution to submit formal charges against Azharul by July 15.
Police arrested Azharul at his Moghbazar home in the capital on August 22 last year after the tribunal issued an arrest warrant against him in connection with crimes against humanity.
