The poor show by Awami League-backed candidates in the ongoing upazila parishad elections has proved that people did not accept the present government that assumed office through a ‘voter-less’ national election, said Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh president B Chowdhury.
“A farcical national election was held on January 5. Only 5 percent to 7 percent — at best 10 percent — of the voters voted in it… and in the upazila parishad elections, AL candidates have lost in two-thirds. Now they have no moral rights to rule the country,” he told a discussion meeting at the Jatiya Press Club on Sunday.
“When the government can ensure only one-third of the people’s support, it has no moral right to govern the country,” he added.
The discussion meeting was organised by Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) to commemorate the National Flag-raising Day on March 2, 1971.
BD Chowdhury, also a former President of the country, said, “Hope, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will understand the pulse of people without any delay.”
He called on the current government to take immediate steps to arrange free and fair parliamentary polls for protecting the democratic rights of people by ensuring their voting rights.
The government should engage in dialogue with all the political parties and take their suggestions to hold a free and fair election, he said. “The more it is delayed, the worse the situation will be,” he added.
Chaired by JSD vice president MA Gofran, the discussion meeting was also addressed by former State Ministers Abu Sayeed and MA Mannan, Krishak Shramik Janata League president Quader Siddiqui and Ganashasthaya Kendra trustee Zafrullah Chowdhury.
