UZ Polls: BNP questions EC’s role

It sends letter to EC

BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Tuesday alleged that the Election Commission is silent about attacks on pro-BNP candidates of the upazila elections, beginning on Wednesday.

“The houses of BNP-backed candidates are being attacked and looted across the country and their family members, and even women and children are not spared in many places, including Shariatpur and Bhairab,” he told reporters.

Rizvi, who led a three-member BNP delegation to the EC to place a party letter to the EC in this regard, said, “Many candidates and incumbent chairmen are on the run to escape arrests as an arrest spree is going on in the election areas, but the Election Commission is silent and inactive about it (preventing the harassment),” Rizvi said.

The delegation went to the EC Secretariat around 2pm and handed over the letter signed by BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to EC acting secretary Sirajul Islam.

“We’ve given the letter to the commission making pointed reference of attacks on and harassments of BNP-minded candidates so far taken place,” the BNP leader told the journalists.

He said this commission is playing a role of spectator as there has been no step to curb the widespread violation of the election code of conduct by ruling party-backed candidates and their leaders and activists.

Rizvi alleged that now BNP men fall victims to incidents of killing, forced disappearance, wholesale arrest, attack and harassment, and these repressive acts began well before the January 5 elections.

“If the commission thinks it’s independent in any way, it’s their duty to arrange this local government body election freely and neutrally,” he added.

Another joint secretary general Barkatullah Bulu was among the delegation members.
