The High Court has directed the government to implement its prior directive on using Bangla language in all advertisements and nameplates by May 15.
The court also asked the authority concerned to submit a report in this regard by the same date.
An HC bench comprising of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Atlaf Hossain passed the order on Tuesday afternoon.
While passing the directives, the court also expressed its dissatisfaction over the reports submitted by the information secretary and cabinet secretary.
Reviewing the reports, it stated that the government was not interested to implement Bangla language in all sphere what was apparent from its activities.
Advertisements, nameplates and banners are still being written in English, and advertisements in the English language or a mix of the languages were also being used in all electronic and print media violating the court’s directive, the court said.
“If needed we will make all secretaries stand here if the order is not executed.”
However, the court said only the English-language newspapers may publish advertisements in English.
Responding to a writ petition, on February 17 the High Court ordered the government to take steps to ensure the use of Bangla on the nameplates of vehicle registration, signboards and billboards across the country.
Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond filed the petition as public interest litigation on February 16.
