Experts at a seminar here on Monday said the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) owners should come forward to adopt energy-efficient technologies to reduce stretch on power generation.
They pointed out that widespread energy inefficiency prevails in the SME sector, which accounts for some 37,000 industries, for lack of awareness about the benefits of energy-saving technologies.
The seminar, titled ‘Energy Efficiency and Production Measures for SME of Bangladesh’, was organised by the SME Foundation at its office.
In his keynote presentation, Prof Ijaz Hossain of the Chemical Engineering Department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) said: “Most owners aren’t aware that the adoption of efficient lighting, retrofit motors and water-saving technologies can lead to a great reduction of the production by way of reducing the energy consumption during the lifetime of the devices.”
The government must also come forward with programmes to boost the use of energy-efficient equipment in industrial production that will ensure a sustainable development of the industrial sectors and energy security of the country, threatened due to the rise of oil prices and depletion of natural gas resources, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Industry Minister Dilip Barua said, “The country needs a knowledge-based, technology-intensive and green industrialisation to sustain the economic development in the coming days.”
“It’s important to use energy-efficient technologies in our industrial production to save production costs, reduce stretch on energy generation, and ensure green products,” he said, adding that the demand for green products are gradually increasing in the European export markets.
The seminar was presided over by SME Foundation managing director (acting) M Mujibur Rahman.
