A local Union Parishad (UP) chairman was shot to death by unknown miscreants at Mohishadanga intersection in Sharsha upazila on Sunday evening.
The deceased was identified as Abdur Razzaque, 48, chairman of Putkhali Union Parishad and son of Imtaz Ali of Baropota village in the upazila.
Witnesses said a gang of criminals intercepted the private car of Razzaque at the intersection at about 6:30 pm while he was returning to his residence from the upazila headquarters.
Later, they dragged him out of the vehicle, chopped him indiscriminately and opened fire on him, leaving him dead on the spot.
Police said a conflict over establishing dominance in the locality might have been the reason behind the murder.
