The cabinet division has formed a probe committee over a lawsuit that led to the arrest of a upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) for publishing an “improper” portrait of Bangabandhu on an invitation card.

The five-member body will be led by an additional secretary of the cabinet division, said Cabinet Secretary Md Shafiul Alam.

It was formed back in July 22 and the committee will report by 15 days on why Barguna Sadar UNO Tariq Salman was arrested and that if legal procedures were followed, the secretary added.

The committee will take action if they find anyone’s negligence in the incident.

Meanwhile, Barisal and Barguna DCs have been withdrawn over harassment of UNO Gazi Tariq Salmon as well.

Barguna Sadar UNO Salman had printed the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, drawn by a child, on an invitation card.

It prompted a Barisal district leader of Awami League, Obaidullah Sazu, to sue the UNO in a defamation suit for “ruining” the image of father of the nation. The UNO was arrested after that.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina strongly condemned the incident. She wanted to know who filed the lawsuit, and said that the child-drawn picture and the UNO – both deserved a reward.
