Politicians, academicians and other professionals have urged the political parties to launch united movements to curb the terrorist and extremist activities across the country.
They made the demand at a daylong convention on terrorism and fascism, organised by the Democratic Left Alliance, a combine of eight left leaning political parties, at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Thursday.
The combine coordinator, Shubhrangshu Chakrabartty, chaired the programmes and presented the keynote paper.
He alleged that the negligence and fascist attitude of the government were responsible for the rapid rise of religious terrorism and extremism across the country.
He called on the left, democratic and progressive parties to come forward to save the country from these terrorist forces.
Dhaka University professor emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury said the state failed to educate the young generation properly and create sufficient job facilities for them.
As a result, out of frustration, they were being involved in different anti-social activities, he said.
He also alleged that the state was becoming fascist and reducing political spaces for other political parties.
‘Students of the private universities are not getting the scope of learning our history,’ he said.
He demanded reintroduction of the students’ union elections at educational institutions to engage them in cultural and social activities.
Jahangirnagar University Professor Anu Muhammad said that the government failed to take effective steps to curb the terrorist forces in the country.
He alleged that the government was signing unequal and unethical agreements with different countries when country was suffering from terrorist attacks.
Lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua called on the left parties to form an alternative political force.
Among others, politicians—Khalequzzaman, Syed Abu Zafar Ahmed, Faiezul Hakim Lala, Saiful Huq, Zonayed Saki, Mushrefa Mishu, Mosharraf Hossain Nannu, and Hamidul Haque, garment labour leaders—Mahbubur Rahman Ismail, and Nazrul Islam, journalist Golam Mortuza, farmer leader Nimai Ganguly, women leader Shyamoly Shill, and student leader Nayeema Khaled Monica participated in the discussion.
