Uncertainty casts shadow over polls: Fakhrul

Misdeeds, misrule made govt isolated, he says

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday alleged that the country’s electorate is suffering from a deep uncertainty whether they can exercise their franchise in the next national election.

“The government has scrapped the caretaker government system to snatch people’s voting rights. The country’s people are now suffering from a deep uncertainty whether they will at all be able to cast their votes in the next polls,” he said.

“People want to know from us if we’ll go to polls under a partisan government.  We’ve clearly said we won’t participate in the (10th parliamentary) election if it isn’t held under the supervision of a caretaker government. There’ll be no election under (PM) Sheikh Hasina,” Fakhrul added.

The BNP leader made the remarks while addressing a rally organised by the Akcha union unit of the opposition party on the premises of Akcha Union Parishad in Sadar upazila.

Castigating the government for what he said indulging in widespread corruption in the banking sector, Fakhrul said the present government with the help of its party men, have looted thousands of crores of taka from different banks, including state-run Sonali Bank.

He also said the government got isolated from people for its misdeeds, misrule and repressive acts.

“Awami League has understood that the country’s people aren’t with them after the elections to five city corporations. It’s now unwilling to go to polls under a non-party neutral administration fearing a massive debacle,” the BNP leader said.

Mentioning that the country’s around 90 percent people and most parties, including AL-led grand alliance partner Jatiya Party, want the next polls under a non-party government, Fakhrul called upon the Prime Minister to restore the caretaker government system if she has minimum respect for democracy.

He claimed BNP believes in communal harmony and unity instead of politics of division. “But this regime in a planned way is trying to create divisions among people.”

The BNP spokesman alleged that communal attacks have marked a sharp rise during the tenure of the present government. “There’ve been the highest number of communal attacks and vandalism of temples during the tenure of Awami League led government.”

Local BNP leaders also addressed the rally.
