Transport workers on Saturday blocked the First Bangladesh- China Friendship Bridge over Buriganga at Postagola in the city, protesting against the newly imposed toll hike by the roads and highways department.
The bridge remained blocked since dawn snapping communications between Dhaka and a number of southern districts via Keraniganj, Munshiganj.
The blockade created long traffic jam on the both ends of the bridge triggering enormous sufferings to the commuters.
The transport workers gave a 36-hour ultimatum to government for withdrawing the excessive toll rate, said a transport worker leader, Emdadul Haque Dadan.
Emdadul Haque also the central leader of Sramik-Malik Oikya Parishad said they would wage tougher movement if the authority does not meet their demand within 36 hours.
Meanwhile, sub-divisional engineer of Bangladesh Roads and Highway Department, SM Khairul Islam, said the authority were collecting toll as per government’s fresh toll policy of 2014.
Assistant commissioner of police of Wari zone, Nurul Amin, said they were trying to control the situation and arrange dialogue between the agitator and authority.
According to the fresh toll policy bicycle came under toll count.
The tolls were increased for auto-rickshaw to Tk 35 from Tk 10, for motorcycle Tk 15 from Tk 5, for microbus Tk 75 from Tk 20, for truck Tk 240 from Tk 120 and for bicycle Tk 5.
