Readymade garment owners’ association BGMEA says it believes there has been ‘over reaction’ to the killing of foreigners in Bangladesh.
Its President Md Siddiqur Rahman on Saturday claimed the incidents did not “affect the sector”.
“There was over reaction after the killings,” he said at media briefing at the BGMEA headquarters.
He noted that foreigners were murdered in other countries, too.
Rahman assured the situation was fully under the government’s control.
“The law and order has not deteriorated to a level that foreigners would have to restrict their movements,” the BGMEA chief added.
Italian Cesare Tavella was shot dead in Dhaka on Sep 28 and Japanese Kunio Hoshi was killed in similar manner on Oct 3 in Rangpur.
Several countries issued travel advisories for their nationals despite the government’s assurance of adequate security measures.
The BGMEA chief rejected media reports that top retailers H&M and GAP executives had shelved their tours following the killing of expats.
“They came here with their teams,” he said.
Businessmen from the tourism and export sectors sought the government’s intervention, fearing the incidents would affect them.
BGMEA chief Rahman did not, however, clarify what he meant by ‘over reaction’.
“A vested quarter could be behind the incidents,” he said. “The government is investigating. We’ll get to know the details once the investigation is over.”
