Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir on Thursday categorically said those responsible for the Savar tragedy will be brought to justice.
“Those responsible will be put on trial, no matter which party they belong to or whose relatives they are. He may be Rana or any party member and anyone’s relatives, stern legal action will be taken against those for their offences after arresting them on the basis of investigation report,” he told a press briefing at his ministry.
The minister said a case was filed in this connection and the owner of the building, Rana, has been made an accused in it.
A five- member probe committee, led by additional secretary Main Uddin Khandakar, has been formed. “And the committee has been asked to submit its report within seven working days,” he said.
The Home Minister also said two policemen – one assistance sub-inspector (ASI) and one constable of industrial police who had gone to visit the cracks of the building on Wednesday morning – were killed in the crash.
Asked about his interview with BBC on hartal supporters, he said, “We were not sure whether the building collapsed due to shaking of its main gate and its broken portion by some hartal supporters. It’ll also be ascertained through the investigation,” MKA also said.
The minister, however, said the building was not built following the building code.
About demonstration by garment workers against keeping the factories open on the mourning day, the minister said, “The mourning day doesn’t mean holiday, we tried to convince the workers…some of them went back to their works and some didn’t.”
“It was not our duty to see whether the building was built legally or illegally. It was the duty of the local administration. But we had directed the authorities concerned to visit the dilapidated buildings in the city.”
