A day before the judgment in money laundering case against BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, the main opposition party on Saturday apprehended that their leader might be punished at the government’s behest.

“We don’t know what would be the verdict. But we can say the government couldn’t prove any charge brought against Tarique Rahman. Now they might give a verdict at the dictate of the government in which he is likely to be found guilty,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Addressing a discussion, he also said the government is continuously conspiring against Zia Family to make political gains.

BNP arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club, marking the 37th death anniversary of great leader Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, popularly called ‘Majloom Jononeta’ (leader of the oppressed).

Fakhrul said the government will not be able to suppress the opposition’s movement by punishing the party chairperson’s sons in ‘false’ cases.

He also urged all to get united to foil the government’s all plots and force it hold the next polls under a non-party government.

A Dhaka court will deliver on Sunday the judgment in the much-talked-about money laundering case faces by BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman and his business partner detained Giasuddin Al Mamun.

During the past military- backed caretaker government, the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case on October 26, 2009 with Cantonment Police Station against accused Tarique and Mamun on charge of siphoning off Tk 20.41 crore to Singapore between 2003 and 2007.

Staying in London since September 2008 for treatment after securing bail in connection with over a dozen of criminal cases, including extortion, Tarique, also son of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, was tried in absentia as he remained fugitive during the whole trial period.

After getting the court clearance, the ACC had also sought Interpol’s help to arrest Tarique Rahman, but failed.

Earlier on June 23, Arafat Rahman Koko, younger son of Khaleda Zia, was yesterday sentenced to six years’ rigorous imprisonment for laundering over Tk 20 crore to Singapore.
