Awami League senior leader Suranjit Sengupta on Friday said the government needs to take a strong stance against the growing incidents of killings and disappearances as these are not good for a democratic system in any way.
“The government must show an uncompromising attitude when it comes to ensuring good governance as it will have to meet the expectations of people,” he told a discussion in the capital.
Bangabandhu Academy, a pro-Awami League organisation, held the discussion at the Institution of Diploma Engineers.
The AL advisory council member said the administration should be uncompromising while dealing with criminals, no matter how powerful they are.
About the recent killings and disappearances, Suranjit claimed that there might have been involvement and instigation of the opposition alliance in the incidents. “So, the administration will have to curb these with an iron hand.”
Coming down hard on BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for her Thursday’s call for the ouster of the current regime to ensure the security of people, the AL leader said the BNP chief had waged an anti-government movement before the January 5 election, but could not succeed.
“It’s a daydream to think of pulling down the current elected government and installing a new one… the daydream which couldn’t be materialised in the past can’t be done now either,” he said.
Former AL joint general secretary Mozaffar Hossain, independent MP Haji Mohammad Selim, Dhaka City AL unit vice president Fayez Uddin Miah, among others, spoke at the discussion held with Bangabandhu Academy vice president Chittaranjan Das in the chair.
