Even a few days ago, Nazma could hardly believe that her baby Suraiya would recover from bullet wounds.
The two returned to their Magura home last night after undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for about a month.
The baby was injured in her mother’s womb on July 23 in a clash between two rival factions of Jubo League, youth front of the ruling Awami League, at Doarpar of Magura town.
Eight-month pregnant Nazma suffered a single bullet wound to the abdomen. The bullet pierced through the unborn baby’s shoulder.
Health Minister Mohammed Nasim formally handed over the baby to her mother at the DMCH conference room around 1:00pm yesterday.
Thanking the physicians and staff of the hospital for their effort, the minister said he handed over the baby to her mother on the prime minister’s behalf.
Nazma expressed gratitude to Allah for their recovery and thanked all the medical staff involved in their treatment.
On July 23, Nazma was taken to Magura General Hospital where doctors carried out a two-hour caesarian section to deliver the baby.
The baby’s relatives brought the newborn to DMCH on July 26. A 10-member medical board was formed to ensure proper treatment of the baby.
According to physicians’ advice, Nazma was taken to DMCH on July 29 to feed her baby breast milk. The parents then named their daughter Suraiya.
Prof Dr Abdul Hanif Tablu of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at DMCH said they decided to release the baby as she was in sound condition.
A case was filed with Magura Sadar Police Station in connection with the July 23 clash, accusing 16 people, including Magura district Chhatra League Vice-president Sen Suman, of involvement in the incident. The clash left a man killed and another injured, excluding Nazma and her baby.
An accused in the case, Mehedi Hasan Ajibor, was killed in a “gunfight” between his accomplices and police in Magura on Tuesday.
