Arafat Sunny starred on the opening day of the National Cricket League second round as the experienced left-arm spinner claimed 7-57 to help Dhaka Metropolis bowl Dhaka Division out for 206 runs in Fatullah on Monday.
Sadikur Rahman struck 106 off 190 balls while Yasir Ali made 84 runs as Chattogram ended the first day with 282-9 in the other tier-two match against Sylhet in Cox’s Bazar.
At the Shaheed Kamruzzaman Stadium in Rajshahi, the hosts are in control against Rangpur in a tier-one match, bowling out the opponents for 151 before reaching 99-0 at stumps.
Despite being reduced to 168-7, Barishal’s lower-order fought hard and guided them to score 266-8 before the end of first day’s play against Khulna at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna.
Dhaka Division v Dhaka Metro
Sent into bat first, Dhaka top-orders struggled against Sunny, who picked up four out of their first six wickets to reduce them to 102-6 in 42nd over.
Taibur Rahman struck 88 off 122 balls and tried to rebuild the innings with Mosharraf Hossain (27) with an 86-run stand for the seventh wicket but Sunny completed his 18th first-class five-for by dismissing the latter.
Mohmmad Ashraful (2-19) dismissed Taibur soon and picked up one more wicket as Metro bowled out Dhaka in 75 overs in their first innings. In reply, Metro reached 26-0 before the stumps.
Chattogram v Sylhet
Chattogram got off to a positive start and reached 226-2 thanks to Sadikur, who made his maiden first-class ton while Mominul Haque (43) and Yasir (84) gave them an early edge in the game.
However, Chattogram soon lost the advantage as Sylhet bowlers took seven wickets for just 56 runs to restrict the opponents to 282-9 in 87 overs at stumps.
Off-spinner Shahanur Rahman claimed 3-58 while Abu Jayed and Nabil Samad bagged two wickets each for Sylhet.
Rangpur v Rajshahi
Experienced Naeem Islam struck 60 off 142 balls but rest of the batsmen failed to carry their previous match form as Rangpur were bundled out for just 151 runs in 59.4 overs in their first innings.
Rajshahi bowlers picked up wickets at regular intervals and despite a 58-run seventh wicket stand between Naeem and Sohrawardi Shuvo (27), Rangpur had nothing in their innings.
Farhad Reza and Mohor Sheikh shared six wickets while Shafiqul Islam claimed two wickets for Rajshahi.
In reply, Miozanur Rahman (59 not out) and Nazmul Hossain (37 not out) made an unbroken solid 99-run stand to finish the day on a high.
Barishal v Khulna
Shahriar Nafees (41) and Sohag Gazi (38) got starts but failed to make their innings big ones as Barishal found themselves in a critical stage before Nuruzzaman provided resistance with tail.
Nuruzzaman added 61 with Shamsul Islam (30) for the eighth wicket while making a 35-run unbroken stand with last man Monir Hossain (21 not out) to give their bowlers some chances after they were sent into to bat first.
The 23-year old remained unbeaten on 48 off 115 balls to frustrate Khulna bowlers in day one.
Veteran spinner Abdur Razzak claimed 3-103 while Al-Amin Hossain and Mahedi Hasan took two wickets each for Khulna.
