The High Court on Sunday directed the archaeological department and police to stop the ongoing construction in the historical Lalbagh Fort within 24 hours.
The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman also asked the authorities to submit compliance report to the court on July 5.
The bench also directed the archaeological department and the fort curator to explain in two weeks why they should not be directed to protect the 17th century Mughal palace fortress, a core tourist attraction in the country.
The court also asked the authorities to explain why they should not be asked to restore the damaged Lalbagh Fort boundary wall to its original shape.
The court passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh secretary general Asaduzzaman Siddique.
The writ petitioner’s lawyer Manzill Murshid referred the court to various newspaper reports published on Saturday that the Lalbagh Fort authorities were constructing parking yard, damaging a boundary wall of the historic fort.
