For the first time in a Test match against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka have failed to register a win. Sri Lanka had won all previous twelve Tests against Bangladesh.
Sri Lanka’s winning % of 92.30 against Bangladesh is quite impressive.
Since registering a ten-wicket win over New Zealand at Galle in November 2012, Sri Lanka have lost four successive Tests (one vs New Zealand and three vs Australia in Australia) followed by a drawn game against Bangladesh.
Tillakaratne Dilshan (126) has registered his fourth century against Bangladesh – his 16th in Tests.
Dilshan has managed eight centuries each at home and overseas in Tests.
Amongst the batsmen with 500 Test runs or more against Bangladesh, Dilshan’s average of 79.25 is the highest – 951 runs in 13 innings.
Kumar Sangakkara’s 32nd century (105 off 172 balls) in Tests is his fourth against Bangladesh. He has emulated Steve Waugh’s tally of hundreds and only six batsmen have registered more hundreds than Sangakkara – Sachin Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (44), Ricky Ponting (41), Rahul Dravid (36), Sunil Gavaskar (34) and Brian Lara (34).
Sangakkara is the fifth Sri Lankan to register a hundred in each innings of a Test match, joining Aravinda de Silva (twice – once each against India and Pakistan), Asanka Gurusinha, Duleep Mendis and Tillakaratne Dilshan.
Sangakkara is the second Sri Lankan to post a hundred in each innings of a Test match (142 + 105) against Bangladesh. Dilshan was the first to perform the feat – 162 & 143 at Chittagong at Chittagong Div. in 2008-09.
Sangakkara’s aforesaid innings is his 20th century in Tests in Sri Lanka.
Sangakkara’s tally of 32 hundreds in 116 Tests is a record by a Sri Lankan player in Tests, obliterating Mahela Jayawardene’s tally of 31 in 138 Tests.
The top four batsmen in terms of run-aggregate against Bangladesh are – Kumar Sangakkara (1123), Tillakaratne Dilshan (951), Mahela Jayawardene (860) and Sachin Tendulkar (820).
For the second time in the history of Test cricket, eight hundreds have been regtistered in a Test match. West Indies (four) vs south Africa (four) game at St John’s in 2005 had produced eight hundreds in the first two innings of a Test match.
In the third match innings, Sangakkara has posted eleven hundreds, establishing a Test record – the next best being ten each by Matthew Hayden, Sachin Tendulkar and Jacques Kallis.
Dilshan and Sangakkara have shared a stand of 213 – Sri Lanka’s highest stand for the second wicket against Bangladesh – the fifth highest by any pair for the second wicket against Bangladesh in Tests.
The above partnership is the highest for the second wicket by any pair at Galle, eclipsing the 196 for the second wicket between Chris Gayle and Darren Bravo for the West Indies in November 2010.
Sri Lanka’s 905 for eight wickets (570 for four wickets declared + 335 for four wickets declared) is their highest total in a Test match at Galle, surpassing Australia’s 732 for 18 wickets against Sri Lanka in March 2004.
Sri Lanka’s aforesaid total is their second highest in a Test match (both innings), next only to their 952 for six wickets against India at Colombo, RPS in August 1997.
The just concluded Test has produced 1613 runs for the loss of 19 wickets – a record for the highest run-aggregate in a Test match in Sri Lanka, outstripping the 1489 for 14 wickets between India and Sri Lanka at Colombo, RPS in 1997-98.
The aforesaid aggregate is the second highest in the sub-continent, next only to the 1702 for 28 wickets between Pakistan and India at Faisalabad in January 2006.
