SQ Chy, Mojaheed seek presidential clemency: law minister

Salauddin-Mojaheed

Death row war crimes convicts Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed have sought presidential clemency, law minister Anisul Huq confirmed on Saturday.
‘Two applications are now at home ministry and they would reach the president’s office immediately,’ he told New Age.
The minister said the president would seek opinion of law ministry and then it would be sent to prime minister’s office with the president’s decision. From there it would be sent to home ministry again, he added.
Former law minister Shafique Ahmed told New Age that as per procedure such application first reaches home ministry and it sends it to law ministry for vetting and then the file is sent to the prime minister’s office. ‘Then it reaches the president and he takes the final decision,’ said Shafique Ahmed recalling similar instance during execution of the convicts of Bangabahndhu murder case where a convict had sought clemency.
‘For seeking clemency the convict has to admit all his offence and repent for those,’ he added.
Shafique Ahmed said the entire process is not a lengthy one rather it was matter of hardly two hours to two hours and a half.
This is first time any war crimes convict seeks presidential clemency.
