Police have seized private station Somoy TV’s live broadcast instruments while they were being brought out from BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s office at Gulshan.
Somoy TV reporter Shatila Sarmin was handing the live broadcast device in a backpack to cameraperson Ruhul Rahman Sohail when it was seized on Tuesday afternoon.
Assistant commissioner of DMP Nurul Alam said they suspected the device was being handed over secretly.
“We’ll return the device after checking it,” he said.
A police officer on duty at the scene said the law enforcers just could not allow such an automatic device to be handed over from the office.
Police first checked the device and then spoke to reporter Rahman. It was taken away afterwards.
They also wrote down her contact details.
Rahman and a reporter of NTV have been staying in the office since the BNP chief was barred to leave it on Jan 3 amidst demonstration to mark the first anniversary of the last general election on Jan 5.
Somoy TV officials said they could broadcast live events inside the office with the device. They were returning the device as it was not necessary anymore, they said.
Food Minister Qamrul Islam’s brother filmmaker Morshedul Islam owns Somoy TV.
