Heavy machineries are not being used in the rescue operation at Rana Plaza in Savar as it may further put to risk the lives under the debris, says the Director of Inter Service Public Relations Directorate (ISPR).
Md Shaheenul Islam in a press brief on Friday refuted claims that suggested that the government machinery was conducting the operation too slow, saying, “The rescue operation is being carried out on directions from the government. All heavy machineries required for rescue is at their disposal, but those heavy equipment are not being use as their use may further endanger the lives of those who are trapped inside.”
The ISPR Director held a press briefing on the rescue operation in Monsur Market near Rana Plaza on Friday.
The rescue operation would continue until the recovery or the rescue of the very last victim, he said.
“There is no scarcity of oxygen. There is sufficient supply of oxygen for those who are still trapped. They are being supplied in small and large cylinders,” Shaheenul said.
“We cannot say with certainty how many are still trapped. The main concern now is how to rescue those who are alive,” he said.
Shaheenul Islam said trained rescuers were taking part in the operation involving a lot of risk.
“The 35,000 square-foot building cannot be accessed from several points. The rescue efforts are being carried out keeping these realities in mind,” he said.
When asked if precautions had been taken to prevent further collapse of the hazardous structure, Shaheenul said, “We don’t have time to take precautions. We have to carry on working under the risk.”
