Police have failed to find out in last one and a half months who abducted environment advocate Syeda Rizwana Hasan’s husband Abu Bakar Siddique.
The abduction of Siddique, an official of a garment factory, on April 16 from Narayanganj caused uproar in Bangladesh.
But the public and media focus shifted after seven people, including a Narayanganj ward councillor and a lawyer, were abducted and killed.
A special committee was formed to investigate the abduction after Rizwana filed a case with Fatulla Police Station in Narayanganj.
Siddique was rescued two days after the abduction.
When asked, Fatulla Police Station Inspector Enayet Shafi, who is in charge of the case, told bdnews24.com: “The victim cannot name any suspect.”
“There is no clue. The number plate of the vehicle which was used to kidnap him was fake.”
“No progress as such has been made,” said Shafi who saw no reason to be frustrated.
Fatulla Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Saiful Islam was the first investigator in the case.
Later, the Shafi was tasked with the responsibility as Narayanganj police underwent a major reshuffle following the seven murders.
He has already spoken to Siddique and his wife in Dhaka.
Rizwana still has confidence in police despite the lack of progress and is ready to give them more time.
“Police have to be given time in the investigation. It needed time to find out the criminals in 10-truck arms haul. Time is needed for trial too,” she told bdnews24.com.
Siddique is not going to his office after the incident.
Rizwana said: “Given the situation in Narayanganj, we don’t think it’s safe for him to go there. That’s why he has to stay home.”
Rizwana, who just came back home after an overseas visit, has no complaint about the investigation.
“Apart from the investigation committee comprising of police and RAB, the police officers involved in the probe are contacting us regularly. Besides that, police are giving attention to the security issue.”
Miscreants abducted Siddique from Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road on April 16. He was found in an auto-rickshaw at Kalabagan in the capital 35 hours later.
He said at the time that the kidnappers freed him near Mirpur-1.
A special committee comprising of police and RAB was formed with DMP’s Additional Commissioner Sheikh Muhammad Maruf Hasan in charge to help the investigation officer.
