Shun stubbornness, accept CG: BNP to govt

Fakhrul urges PM to try to understand national pulse

Rejecting the Prime Minister’s remarks that the next general election will be held the way elections are held in other parliamentary democracies, opposition BNP on Tuesday urged the government to arrange it under a non-party caretaker government shunning its stubbornness and vanity.

“People have given their verdict in favour of restoration of the caretaker government system in the five city corporations’ polls. Please shun your (PM) vanity, brag and stubbornness and reinstate the caretaker government system to conduct the next general election,” said BNP acting secretary general Morza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

The BNP spokesman came up with the call while addressing a discussion, ‘Tarique Rahman and Future Bangladesh’ organised by Nationalist Research Cnetre (NRC) at the Jatiya Press Club.

Earlier on Monday, addressing a meeting with peers and members of the UK Parliament at London Hilton Hotel, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reiterated that the next general election in Bangladesh will be held as per the constitution, and it will follow other parliamentary democracies, including the UK, in the world.

Reacting to the PM’s remark, Fakhrul said, Sheikh Hasina is now talking for an election like UK-style as she knows it very well her party will face a miserable defeat in the general election if it is held under a non-party administration.

“I would like to tell the Prime Minister you can say this sitting in London as democracy is very strong there. But the next general election must be held in Bangladesh under a non-party caretaker government due to prevailing mistrust and no-confidence among the political parties here. People also won’t accept the polls under a party government,” he added.

Referring to BNP-backed candidates’ successes in the recent city corporations’ polls, he urged the Prime Minister to try to read public mind and their language.

Criticising the government for what he said its failure to run the country, the BNP leader said people turned away from the ruling party due its failures to implement election pledges and unbridled corruption.

He also pointed that government’s failures to resolve people’s problems, bring down the prices of essentials, generating income, improve the law and order situation and ensure the security of people and their property are the main reasons for the debacle of the ruling party in the city polls.

Fakhrul alleged that the government made various evil designs to take the results of the five city corporations’ polls in their favour but people foiled their all attempts.

He also alleged that the players of the 1/11 wanted to annihilate BNP but failed and had to flee the country.

Narrating the tortures on BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman after 1/11 changeover, Fakhrul said many false cases were filed against Tarique to damage his image and destroy BNP.

After the discussion, the BNP acting secretary general inaugurated a documentary on the life and works of Tarique.
