Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student body of Jamaat-e-Islami, has called a countrywide daylong hartal (shutdown) for Thursday to demand release of its president who, it claimed, was tortured during remand.
Abdul Jabbar, secretary general of Shibir, made the announcement through a press release on Tuesday.
On March 31, detectives arrested Shibir President Delwar Hossain at his sister’s house in Shyamoli of the capital.
He was placed on a 14 days’ remand on April 1 for his alleged involvement in assaulting police and blasting cocktails on Mirpur Road in the capital on February 28.
Delwar was directly involved in assaulting police and blasting cocktails in front of Care Hospital during a hartal enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami on the day, police said.
Police sources earlier said Delwar was a charge-sheeted accused in a dozen criminal cases.
