Eight of the 13 aspirants for the Narayanganj-5 by-poll have submitted their nomination papers.
But Krishak Sramik Janata League chief Kader Siddiki has decided not to join the fray.
The candidates submitted their papers to returning officer on Thursday.
Former Awami League MP SM Akram, contesting the polls as an independent candidate, is banking on the votes of the BNP supporters.
The BNP and its allies are boycotting the parliamentary vote, just as they did to the general elections, demanding a non-party caretaker government supervision of the polls.
“At present, the government’s image is very bad,” said Akram, who was an Awami League MP in 1996.
He hopes to be supported by Narayanganj City Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy. He campaigned for her in the 2011 city polls in defiance of a party decision.
Another aspirant is Jatiya Party’s (JP) Selim Osman, brother of Narayanganj-5 MP Nasim Osman whose death left the seat vacant.
The Awami League has decided to leave the seat for the JP.
Osman sought Ivy’s support, saying he had joined the fray after talks with the city people.
Other major candidates include Narayanganj metropolitan unit Awami League chief Anowar Hossain as a party renegade, Rafiur Rabbi, father of slain A-level student Tanvir Mohammad Twaki, BNF’s Abu Hamidur Reza Khan Bhasani, Krishak Sramik Janata League district unit chief Shafiqul Islam Delowar, the party’s Gazipur chapter chief Iqbal Siddiqui, and lawyer Mamun Sirajul Majid.
