Schoolboy killed in City College students’ clash

Nine people have been arrested so far in connection with the incident, says police officer

A schoolboy has fallen to death as his brother was involved in a clash between two groups of students of Dhaka City College in the capital’s Dhanmondi on Monday afternoon.

The victim was Md Ayaz Haq, 17, son of HC lawyer Shahidul Haq and resident of 63/4, North Circular Road in Dhanmondi.

Ayaz has passed SSC from Government laboratory High School this year and was waiting for getting admission into college.

Sub-inspector Jahangir of Dhanmondi police said upon information that a boy was being beaten in the Dhanmondi Lake area near gate no 4 of BGB in the afternoon, the police rushed to the spot and rescued the boy.

“They sent him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the duty doctor declared him dead around 6pm.”

Witnesses said there had been a clash centring football playing between two groups of the students of Dhaka City College, where brother of the deceased, Md Arzin Haq, a student of the college, was involved.

The clash spread the area from Dhaka City College to Dhanmondi, they said.

Arzin, probably, had some involvement in the clash for taking the side of his brother.

For this reason, he might have fallen victim to the clash.

The police officer said nine people have been arrested so far in connection with the incident.

Father of the deceased said he made a call to his son’s mobile around 4:30pm.

However, some police members instead of his son picked up the phone and informed him that his son was admitted at DMCH.

He talked to Dhaka Tribune at the morgue of the hospital in the evening.

Ayaz’s mother said his son took Tk50 from her and said he would come back after a while.
