Jamaat-e-Islami has called a 48-hour countrywide hartal (shutdown) from 6:00am Wednesday following a Supreme Court awarding death penalty to its leader Abdul Quader Mollah for wartime offences.
The apex court handed down the verdict responding to appeals against a trial court verdict ordering his life-term imprisonment.
However, the party cited different reasons “officially” when asked about reason for the shutdown.
Talking to The Daily Star, a central leader said on condition of anonymity that Jamaat decided to enforce the hartal in protest against the “government’s oppression and torture on the party leaders across the country”.
“Other reasons include restoration of the caretaker government system and release of our leaders,” the leader said.
